Please note that a couple of very good things happened since the second impression of "The Garden Guardian's guide" was released early 2007; the most important is the withdrawal of liquid concentrated chlorpyrifos formulations for use in the home garden. At the time of print late 2006, chlorpyrifos and many other organophosphate formulations dominated the pesticide shelves at most garden centres, hardware and food stores

Most small home garden pack size chlorpyrifos and various other organophosphate formulations have been voluntarily withdrawn by their suppliers from the shelves for use in the South African home garden since March 2009. This clearly shows that suppliers have become more environmentally-conscious and that South Africa is following the trends set in the European Union, United States and other countries.

DISCLAIMER

The information included in these XACT guides is based on labels and data obtained from registration holders and distributors. These guides are intended to serve as a guideline to the availability of mainly chemical products and contain summaries of toxicological and environmental data of active ingredients used in commercial products. The use of some of these chemical products do not necessarily carry the approval of the Garden Care website but the information made available is of huge value to assist users in making environmentally-responsible  decisions when agricultural crops and biological diversity needs to be protected in South Africa. Garden Care supports Integrated Pest Management which is by definition the careful consideration of all available pest control techniques and subsequent integration of appropriate measures that discourage the development of pest populations and minimise the risks to human health and the environment and therefore encourages natural pest control mechanisms
