WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF ENVIRONMENTALLY-RESPONSIBLE GARDEN CARE
The main objective is to assist you in obtaining maximum information regarding environmentally-responsible garden care products and practises to eliminate or minimise the risk to human health and the environment which by definition includes garden and natural surroundings, water, air. soil and their interrelationship as well as all relationships between them and any living organism.
There is no such thing as a safe pesticide. From natural origin or synthetically manufactured, they are all designed to kill or repel pests to prevent destruction or loss of crops. By far the most responsible way of caring for one’s garden is to use no pesticides at all. The best way to achieve this is by knowing one’s plants according to their susceptibility to insect and/or disease attack, their ideal growing conditions, cultural practices that are conducive to growing healthy plants and physical and biological control methods that can be used to combat pest problems. The only time pesticides should be used is when there are real problems which can potentially cause great loss. It is only then that one is really justified in applying organic or chemical pesticide remedies, and then only one of those that has the lowest risk to your health and the environment.
A special section has been created under ORGANIC FARMING for information regarding products authorised for use in organic farming. Links to websites dealing with important information regarding the potential health hazard of pesticides to humans and the environment can be found under ENVIRONMENT. For direct website links with agricultural and gardening companies, organic certification bodies, registration and information of pesticides in South Africa, gardening websites, growers and garden centres supplying plants and garden care products, as well as publishers of gardening and farming publications, visit LINKS on this website.
Companies and individuals that share this site's vision of safeguarding health and environment are invited to advertise their environmentally-responsible products free of charge on this website, send an e-mail to Johan Gerber at: johangerber@nashuaisp.co.za
